Housewares Importer: Multi-Warehouse Expansion in Sage 100

Industry: Housewares Import & Distribution  |  Service: Sage 100 Distribution / Inventory Management

The Challenge

A housewares importer based in the City of Industry had been operating from a single warehouse since implementing Sage 100, but was expanding to two additional fulfillment locations — one in Ontario for inland distribution and one in the Long Beach area for port-proximity receiving. Sage 100 was configured for a single warehouse and the company had no established process for inter-warehouse transfers, allocation, or location-specific reporting.

The expansion was happening quickly — the Ontario facility was opening within 90 days — and the company needed Sage 100 to support multi-warehouse operations before the first receiving trucks arrived at the new location.

Our Approach

We began with a discovery session to understand the intended role of each warehouse (primary distribution, regional fulfillment, port-proximity receiving) and the expected transfer patterns between locations. This informed how we structured the Sage 100 warehouse hierarchy and allocation rules.

We configured three warehouse locations in Sage 100's Inventory Management module with location-specific on-hand tracking, set up inter-warehouse transfer workflows with in-transit inventory tracking, and established allocation rules that prioritized the closest warehouse to the ship-to address for sales order fulfillment.

We also built a multi-warehouse inventory position report in Crystal Reports showing on-hand, on-order, and allocated quantities across all three locations in a single view — the primary operational report management had requested.

The full configuration was in place within six weeks of the discovery session, giving the team two weeks of parallel testing before the Ontario facility opened.

Results

🏭

Three Warehouses Live on Day One

Sage 100 was fully configured for all three warehouse locations before the Ontario facility opened, with no gap period requiring manual tracking.

📋

Multi-Location Inventory Visibility

The new multi-warehouse position report gave management real-time inventory visibility across all three locations from a single report, replacing ad-hoc queries and phone calls between facilities.

🔄

Transfer Workflows Established

Inter-warehouse transfer processes were documented and trained before go-live, with in-transit inventory accurately reflected in Sage 100 throughout the transfer lifecycle.
