Choosing the Right Sage 100 Tier: Standard, Advanced, or Premium
Sage 100 comes in three tiers, and the right one depends less on company size alone and more on your data engine, integration, and reporting requirements.
The Three Tiers at a Glance
Sage 100 Standard is designed for smaller businesses with simpler needs and a limited number of users. Sage 100 Advanced uses a more robust data engine suited to growing businesses with more users and data volume. Sage 100 Premium runs on Microsoft SQL Server, offering the most flexibility for reporting, integrations, and larger user counts.
When Standard Makes Sense
Sage 100 Standard fits businesses with a small number of users, straightforward accounting and inventory needs, and limited requirements for custom reporting or third-party integrations.
When Advanced Makes Sense
Advanced is a middle ground for businesses that have outgrown Standard's data engine limits but don't yet need the full SQL Server-based reporting and integration capabilities of Premium.
When Premium Makes Sense
Premium is generally the right choice for businesses planning significant custom reporting (Crystal Reports, Sage Intelligence), multiple third-party integrations (EDI, payment processing, e-commerce), or anticipating growth in user count and data volume. Because Premium runs on SQL Server, it also opens up SQL-level performance tuning options not available on other tiers.
Migration Between Tiers
Businesses can migrate between tiers as needs change, though moving to Premium involves migrating to a SQL Server-based data engine — a project that should be planned similarly to a version upgrade, with attention to third-party plugin compatibility. See our Sage 100 Upgrade page for the general process.
What's the difference between Sage 100 Premium and Advanced?
Sage 100 Premium runs on Microsoft SQL Server, providing more flexibility for custom reporting, third-party integrations, and larger user counts. Sage 100 Advanced uses a different data engine suited to growing businesses that don't yet need SQL Server-level capabilities. For a detailed comparison, see our Sage 100 Premium vs Advanced article.
